Hanh Phuc International Hospital Records Rare Case of Natural Pregnancy After Hemihysterectomy
11/04/2025
Hanh Phuc International Hospital recently reported a rare case of natural pregnancy after the surgical removal of one uterus. This is an exceptionally unique medical situation, presenting numerous challenges in prenatal monitoring and surgical management. The patient had previously undergone surgery to remove the left uterus due to multiple fibroids causing abnormal bleeding. However, a year later, she unexpectedly conceived naturally, with the pregnancy developing normally in the right uterus.

Natural pregnancy after one uterus removed
The patient, Ms. N.T.L., 42 years old, was previously diagnosed with uterus didelphys during her first pregnancy. She had delivered a healthy baby boy via cesarean section, but later experienced abnormal bleeding caused by multiple fibroids in the left uterus. To ensure her long-term health, she underwent surgery to remove the left uterus while preserving both ovaries and the right uterus. After the operation, she was advised that her chances of conceiving would be significantly reduced. Nonetheless, a year later, she discovered she was naturally pregnant and promptly sought care at Hanh Phuc International General Hospital.
Upon confirmation of the pregnancy, the patient was placed under close monitoring. Doctors implemented a strict follow-up regimen to ensure the healthy development of the fetus, including uterine artery Doppler scans, fetal growth assessments, and evaluations to predict the risk of preterm labor. In addition, the hospital provided prenatal nutrition support and care to help the patient carry the pregnancy safely into the later stages.
The pregnancy progressed smoothly without signs of fetal distress or developmental abnormalities. However, at 34 weeks, the patient developed anhydramnios—an obstetric complication that can endanger the fetus if not addressed promptly. To ensure the safety of both mother and baby, the medical team decided to perform a scheduled cesarean section.
Prior to the surgery, the medical team carefully prepared contingency plans to manage potential complications. Given the patient’s history of uterine surgery, the risk of hemorrhage and other complications was a top concern.
The cesarean was successful, and a healthy baby boy weighing 2.8 kg was delivered. No severe complications occurred during surgery, and the mother recovered well, being discharged five days later.
What is uterus didelphys and why is it risky?
Uterus didelphys is a rare congenital anomaly that occurs when the two Müllerian ducts fail to fuse completely during embryonic development, resulting in two separate uterine cavities. This condition is often associated with genital tract abnormalities and significantly increases the risk of infertility, miscarriage, preterm birth, and pregnancy complications.
Many patients with uterus didelphys are only diagnosed when facing difficulties conceiving or giving birth. Even in cases where pregnancy occurs successfully, these women face higher risks of complications than the general population.
Pregnancy in a single uterus following hemihysterectomy is even rarer. It presents additional risks such as reduced uterine function, compromised placental blood flow, and increased risk of preterm birth. Therefore, a natural pregnancy following uterine removal is a remarkable medical event.
Evaluation of pregnancy monitoring process
The successful monitoring and delivery of the patient are credited to the close collaboration of experienced obstetricians, advanced medical equipment, and a strict prenatal care protocol at Hanh Phuc International General Hospital.
